Everything ran very smoothly with this event. I never felt anything had to be
rushed as Graham allowed plenty of time for the various stages of planning. The
best parts of the forest were used for all the courses with only the longer ones
visiting the more brambly southern end. The use of SportIdent punching allowed
for the interesting use of a small area.
My lesson learned on the day was that the "dibber / e card" dies after
36 uses so was relieved to find that units apparently not working were due to an
over used dibber. This would be a problem for competitors failing to clear
their dibbers before starting on their course.

Firstly, thank you all for coming; I hope that you all enjoyed your run. When
I saw the weather on Saturday morning I feared that Sunday morning would be a
wash out, but Sunday morning dawned clear and bright, and not too cold - you
really need to see Bush Heath at 7am on a sunny winter's morning to see it at
its best!
A number of you commented on the brambles. Unfortunately these do seem to be an
increasing problem at Bush Heath. All I can say in mitigation is that Mark's map
was, I believe, pretty accurate in its representation of these. Also, you should
have seen some of the control sites that Jenny and I rejected on the grounds
that you would have been torn to shreds getting to them!
Apologies to those of you whose split times for some controls are incorrect.(see
note below) Unfortunately two of the control boxes decided to switch themselves
off 6 hours early for no apparent reason (we still don't know why they did
this). Fortunately this was spotted, and the controls replaced, before any of
you started. The big unanswered question then was how many more of the forty
plus control boxes already out in the forest had decided to do the same thing! A
frantic check of the control boxes within easy reach of the start/finish
revealed no further problems, but it wasn't until competitors returned from each
of the courses, without problems, that I finally stopped worrying that there was
another dead control box (or worse still an entire set of them) somewhere out in
the forest.
Later concerns about failed control boxes turned out to be false alarms,
generally caused by competitors who had failed to clear and check their dibbers
before starting. If you do not clear your dibber (SI card) before you start, it
will become full part way round the course, and will not record you 'punching'
at later controls (the control box will not 'beep' or 'flash'), in which case
you risk disqualification.
Finally, many thanks to everyone that helped me, in particular Jenny (and John)
for keeping me on the straight and narrow, Mark for updating the map, Fred for
tracking down the printed maps on Saturday morning (!), Bruce for his help with
the SI kit, and all those who helped me to bring in the controls on Sunday
afternoon when the weather was starting to turn nasty.

Note: Finish times were not affected by the erroneous split-times
Of the split times given on the web-site which are incorrect:
1. Orange / Red courses - split times for control 121 have about 141 minutes
added to them.
2. Lt Green / Green / Brown courses - split times for control 129 have about 143
minutes added to them.
Our main comment is to thank all the helpers. Although Jane spent a lot of
time on the phone over the weeks prior to the event, our job on the day
was a bit of a doddle, because all the teams of helpers (26 in number) just did
their jobs so effectively.
The success of the event really does depend on the smooth running of all
aspects, (the organisation = sign-posting, parking, marshalling, registration,
enquiries, E-Card sales/hire, start, finish, up & download, etc; and the
planning and the controlling). There is also a lot of pre- and post- event work
by various Committee members which goes on in the background - event
registering, map printing, permission getting, equipment storing, information
publicising, financial accounting, etc.
Special thanks to Bruce Marshall for sorting out the SportIdent computing system
(albeit in the comfort of Chris Bell's kindly provided luxury motorhome), to
Neil Humphries for computing the results, and to Jenny Collyer for reassuring
control.
Thanks also to the Caravan Club for allowing us to use an almost ideal site for
assembly and parking.
There was a good turn-out, the cake and soup stall was well supported, and the
weather was reasonably kind with only the late leavers getting caught by the
rain.
