WAOC

Level C, Urban and Colour Coded Event

Coe Fen, Newnham, and Cambridge

Saturday, 16 April 2011

Urban orienteering is similar to conventional forest or parkland orienteering, but the emphasis here is on speed, in particular making route choices on the fly to navigate over a mixture of public streets and the parkland of Coe Fen. In addition to the urban courses we are providing conventional colour coded courses on Coe Fen that are safe for juniors.

If you are an orienteer who has had a chance to try street orienteering, you'll already know how much fun these urban events can be. If you are new to the sport or interested in trying orienteering then this is an excellent chance to get a flavour for the sport in a familiar environment. If you enjoy this Urban-O event you will be able to come back in October for the higher profile 2011 Cambridge City Race organised by CUOC.

Urban course 4 (M65+; W55+): 2.9 km*
Please note the urban courses are not open to under 17 year olds for safety reasons.
* Urban course lengths are 'as the crow flies' and actual running distance on optimal routes will be about 50% longer, due to the significant extra distance imposed by uncrossable features.
Age categories in brackets are recommended courses for experienced orienteers, but you can choose to run whichever course you prefer.
Terrain Colour coded courses use the parkland of Coe Fen and Sheep's Green which are separated by the river Cam. Urban courses alternate between these open areas and street networks in Newnham to the South-west and Cambridge to the North-east.
Maps 1:5,000 with preprinted courses, A4 sized.
Urban course maps will be double sided. MAPS will NOT be on waterproof paper, so please remember to ask for, or bring, a plastic bag to protect your map.

Adults £8 (£2 discount for senior BOF and EAOA local club members)
Students & first junior in family £3 (Juniors are under 21)
Further juniors in a family £2

Directions Registration is at the south of Lammas Land.

Finding Registration: From Fen Causeway, head for the roundabout at the Westerly end of Fen Causeway (TL445576). Just before the roundabout there is a pedestrian/cyclist crossing. From here, head south along the river past the childrens playground to find registration.

By car: Lammas Land car park is tiny, and well used by the general public, so please DO NOT use this car park unless you are helping or have very young children.

There is an efficient park and ride system from all directions around Cambridge.

The Trumpington park and ride site is the quickest. It's south of Cambridge on the Hauxton Road, which can be accessed from a dedicated access lane from junction 11 on the M11.

There are buses every 10 minutes and the journey will take around 11 minutes to the stop by Bateman Street and it is then a 5 minute walk to registration. From this stop, turn right to head north up Trumpington Street and then left into Fen Causeway.

For more information on alternative park and ride sites see http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/transport/around/parkandride/

There is very little free parking in the city. There may be space on Cranmer Road, Herschel Road, Adams Road or Barton Road. There is a large lay-by on the south side of the Barton road about 1 mile from assembly (often used as coach parking).
The nearest multi-storey carpark, at Queen Anne Terrace, is cheaper than those in the centre, charging £4.50 for a stay of up to 4 hours and a maximum of £12 for a stay of 6 hours and longer.

By cycle: The registration area is well provided with bike racks and those living locally are encouraged to cycle.

From the west edge of the park, registration will be signposted from the A603 and A1134 roundabout.

By train:Registration is a 15 minute walk from Cambridge Railway Station.

Walk straight ahead out of the station (along Station Road), turn right at the traffic lights, cross over at the pedestrian crossing and take the first road on the left (Bateman Street). At the end of Bateman Street cross over the road, and turn right and then left onto Fen Causway.

Officials Organiser: Cath Pennington (WAOC)
Planner: Peter Woods (WAOC)
Controller: Bruce Marshall (WAOC)
Further Information

We will be using electronic punching. SI cards will be available to hire for 50p.

Beginners are very welcome at this event and help will be available to get you started. Please read our webpage What is orienteering? It should answer any questions you have.

Dogs are welcome on Coe Fen but must be kept under control at all times. Please note there are often cattle on the fields of Coe Fen (although there have been none here recently).

WAOC is not providing toilet facilities for the event, but public toilets are situated on Lammas Land close to registration.

All competitors take part at their own risk. Urban courses involve crossing roads and it is the responsibility of every competitor to take appropriate care when crossing roads.
