I was so pleased that the day went well, having unexpectedly found myself in Bangor hospital a week before the event with a walking injury to the hand (no - it doesn't make sense, but if you were wondering why there was someone wandering round wearing an oven glove, that was me). Fortunately I was able to rely on an excellent team of helpers who would I'm sure have done just as well if not even better had I not made it to the event.

The turnout was impressive - we almost ran out of handout sheets and ran short of maps on some courses towards the end. Apologies to anyone who had to wait to obtain a map, and thanks to all who donated their maps at the finish.

Apologies to the early runners on Yellow who found control 3 (58) was not responding, this was quickly fixed.

I do hope you all enjoyed your run at Ampthill. The courses were harder to plan as I also planned there last year, so I tried to use some new control sites and legs. Finally thank you Peter Allen for his corrections on the school boy errors (quite literally). Also thank you to Peter Woods for organising the event.

Next WAOC event: Mildenhall North Sunday 2nd November.

Controller's Comments

After the event, one orienteer got in contact and confessed to having crossed into an out of bounds area - something they only realised themselves after reviewing their route on the map. This is to be commended (the owning up, not the transgression!) especially as I do not believe any other orienteer (or anyone else) was aware.

However, we could conceivably have received a complaint as a result of this mistake. My message to everyone is - Please remember that our use of areas like Ampthill depends on our all obeying the restrictions placed on us. If you realise you may be in an out of bounds area Don't Panic, Extricate yourself as gracefully as possible, and don't make matters worse by attempting to cross walls or fences where they are not meant to be crossed!
