Planner's Comments

The club has overlooked Mildenhall South in the last few years on account of its small area, but it seemed perfect for this night event. Judging by the splits, different legs managed to catch different runners out, with a few slow starts I suspect due to overshooting before adjusting to the map scale of 1:7500. We did expect the pit (control 80) on the Dark Brown to be difficult in the dark, but I'm not sure why the leg from 84 to 95 near the end of all the longer courses proved trickier for some than for others. You generally managed well in the contoured area on the heath - next time we'll have to try it without a full moon!

Some of you have already posted up your routes on Routegadget (more, please!) and it is clear that the GPS traces reveal some sites are not exactly in the position mapped (as well as revealing the orienteer was not where he or she thought they were). I wonder if this may provide a means to improve the accuracy of maps?
We decided to call the courses Dark Orange etc rather than the more obscure Marmalade. If anyone has any ideas on what to call a Dark Light Green I'd be interested to hear.
Graham, as controller, provided much useful comment and suggestions which I'm sure improved the courses. I'm also grateful to Tim for taking on the organising and to all who helped on the night. Finally thanks to all who turned up and ran and for the many positive comments received.
