Controller's Comments

Those taking part in the mass start (only Blue and Brown runners chose to take advantage of this although it was open to Green and Light Green runners too) are marked in the results with either (M A) or (M B) after their name. The "A" or "B" indicates which of the two map variants they ran.

The vegetation at Ampthill, and with it the relative prominence of some paths, is constantly changing (for example some recent mowing of bracken and other vegetation was a surprise to us when setting out controls). So, as some of you noted, the map is not perfectly accurate in all areas. We did not expect this to cause any significant problems, and the finishing times seem to confirm this. Indeed one runner admitted that it was returning to the central butterfly control for the third time that caused the navigational problems, not finding it the first time!

We were not trying to catch people out by having two similar controls (35 and 72) relatively close, and although they were sufficiently well separated, in retrospect, bearing in mind attention to control descriptions might not be a priority on such fast terrain, we might have tried to avoid that confusion.

It appears some runners on yellow missed the path leading down to control 7, which we had not anticipated. Paths on open ground as at Ampthill can be indistinct and we understimated the difficulty at this junction. Apologies to all on Yellow who missed this junction and spent a long time out on their course and thanks to all who stopped to aid those who were affected.

Nevertheless. Mark's courses were generally well received and we were pleased at the turnout, especially since there was an EA league event happening on the same day. I would like to thank Mark for his considerable efforts in planning the courses, including the loops and gaffles, and Brian, who as organiser had to deal with sudden demise of his PC just when he needed it most.
