Organiser's CommentsNew summer evening league season, new venue, new map. And some rare Cambridgeshire contours... Despite the spectacular thunderstorm at 4.30pm, the controls were all in place in time for a 6.30pm kickoff. No plastic cups - controls, albeit with good old-fashioned pin punches. The 'WAOC runners' will be aware of my tediously expressed opinion that the league should have started in May as previous years, but in the event, the woodland was still fairly runnable, for July, for those with long legs, away from the ride edges. Summer vegetation growth in the woods can encourage path route choices, but hopefully I got you off the paths some of the time. Good to see 28 people from four declared clubs - and not one but two Ursulas. I did not capture age groups, but there were some good performances from the older vets. From comments, mapping clearly needs some more slow run / fight screens and a clearer indication of where woodland paths and the field path connect (or don't) for use in high summer - hopefully there will be a 'next event' here - perhaps when the vegetation is less aggressive. Thank you to the Woodland Trust / Natural England and Sawtry Parish Council for access permission to this SSSI, the weather gods for the meteorological improvement, to Steve, Russ, Ben and Emma for collecting controls and to the 28 runners who made the effort worthwhile - perhaps getting near to the limit for the 'one-man event' formula of the WAOC evening league. Next summer evening league event (hopefully) on Tuesday 9th August. Peter Duthie |
