Controller's CommentsHuntingdon is a bit different to other city race areas that have been used so far, with a relatively small city centre, some complex housing estates and a relatively dead area between them. This, combined with the ring road crossing, made planning quite difficult and Ben and I went through several iterations of courses. I think what emerged made good use of what was available, and people on the day certainly seemed to have found enough challenge. The biggest problem we had was the overprint for course 3. The city loop was controls 6-7-8-9 so controls 5 and 10 were both on the gate at the road crossing. Many people ended up running from 5 to 9 rather than 5 to 6. This was made more likely because at this stage everyone had the map upside down since the city loop is at the south of the map. Perhaps we should have swapped the 5 and 10 over on the overprint, perhaps we should have broken the line from 9 to 10 so that it didn't quite reach the circle at 10, perhaps we should have underlined 6 and 9, or perhaps we should just have added an extra control somewhere to avoid the problem entirely. Apologies to those who got caught out. Control 76 (fence, inside W corner) also caused some comment. This was correctly positioned, and intended to penalise those who ran to the outside corner rather than inside corner. Unfortunately the fence at this point had big enough gaps to reach through so people could punch from outside. Indeed it seems that the control got pulled through the fence at some point. As usual with races like this we had a last-minute panic with the map. In this case it didn't arise until the morning of the event when Ben discovered that two gates had been locked and now had signs saying "This gate is now closed" on them. Unfortunately this removed a critical route choice getting in or out of 50. If you look carefully at your map south east of control 50 you will see two hand-drawn walls blocking off a route south of the big building. Finally my thanks to WAOC for staging the event and showing that areas like this are worth mapping and can provide interesting races. Simon Errington HH |
