Cambridge Urban-O - Sun 31st May

This is WAOC's first Urban Orienteering event and the first such event to be held in Cambridge. The format is similar to our forest or parkland colour coded events, but the emphasis here is on speed, in particular making route choices on the fly to navigate on public streets as well as the parkland of Coe Fen. The courses are relatively short, including conventional colour coded courses that are safe for juniors and avoid public roads.

If you are an orienteer who has had a chance to try street orienteering, you'll already know how much fun these urban events can be. If you are new to the sport or interested in trying orienteering then this is an excellent chance to get a flavour for the sport in a familiar environment. If you enjoy this Urban-O event you will be able to come back in October for the higher profile City Race organised by CUOC.

The event will use electronic punching for all controls. Maps will be pre-marked. Maps will not be bagged so please bring a suitable bag in case of wet weather.

Directions

The assembly area (start and finish) is in the south of Lammas Land/Coe Fen.

Grid reference:

Lammas Land car park is tiny so please could you only use this car park if you are helping or have very young children.

By car: There is an efficient park and ride system from all directions around Cambridge.

The Trumpington park and ride site is the quickest. It's south of Cambridge on the Hauxton Road, which can be accessed from a dedicated access lane from junction 11 on the M11.

There are busses every 15 minutes and the journey will take around 11 minutes to the stop by Bateman Street and it is then a 5 minute walk to the start. Turn left off the bus. Then turn right into the park and right again at the path junction. This footpath crosses over a bridge and the start is in front of you.

For more information on alternative park and ride sites see http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/transport/around/parkandride/

Alternatively there is limited free parking along Queens Road (A1134), West Road and Sidgwick Avenue (a 10-20 minute walk to the start).

From the west edge of the park the start will be signposted from the A603 and A1134 roundabout.

By train: The start is a 15 minute walk from Cambridge Railway Station.

Walk straight ahead out of the station (along Station Road), turn right at the traffic lights, cross over at the pedestrian crossing and take the first road on the left (Bateman Street). At the end of Bateman Street cross over the road, and turn left. Turn right into park and then right again at the path junction. This footpath crosses over a bridge and the start is in front of you.

And lastly: Those coming from close by - why not cycle.
